چکیده

The protein-bound iodine of the blood serum has acquired clinical importance in recent years because of the development of chemical methods for the detection and quantitative estimation of minute quantities of organic iodine in the blood. Its determination is of value because its concentration usually parallels that of the circulating thyroid hormone. In chronic infections with fever, and in chronic pulmonary and cardiac disease, the elevation of the basal metabolic rate may suggest the existence of thyrotoxicosis, but the amount of serum protein-bound iodine is usually within the normal range. It has long been known that the administration of iodides to lepromatous patients may cause marked exacerbations of the disease (2). Some workers (1, 4), especially Muir, have in the past advocated its use as a provocative with the idea that the reactions would be beneficial, but this view has been generally abandoned. . Serious consideration was given to the question of iodine metabolism in leprosy since, to our knowledge, no previous study of protein-bound iodine (PBI) has been made on patients with this disease. A cooperative investigation of the matter was undertaken in two laboratories, in this hospital and in Washington.

Study on the effect of high calcium intake on serum protein bound iodine and urinary excretion of iodine

Iodine deficiency remains a major health problem in the world, including some parts of Iran. It has been recognized that there is usually a close and inverse relationship between iodine in the soil and water and presence of endemic goiter. Calcium has been suggested as one of goitrogens, though the definite role, extent and mechanism particularly in human have not been studied. Serum protein-...

Concentration of serum total iodine and thyroid hormones in Holstein cows in central Iran

The aim of this study was to evaluate total iodine, triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) status in the blood serum of Holstein cows on six farms in central Iran. Total iodine, T3 and T4 concentrations were measured in 90 blood serum samples (15 per farm). Mean concentrations of total iodine (38.80 ± 1.52 µg/l) and T3 (1.57 ± 0.10 nmol/l) were lower but the mean concentration of T4 (45.60 ± ...

Micromethod for the Rapid Determination of Serum Protein-bound Iodine and Total Serum Iodine.

A modification is presented of the chloric acid method for the rapid determination of serum protein-bound iodine and total serum iodine requiring less than 0.5 ml. serum for duplicate determinations. The time required for the entire procedure is less than two hours. By adjusting the amounts of reagents used and by varying the time of digestion, the need for constant and continuous supervision i...

Labeling of Human Serum Albumin with Stable Isotope of Bromine; an in Vitro Study

Background: Possibility to trace-label albumin with isotopes results in information concerning its synthesis, breakdown, and distribution in the intra and extra cellular spaces. The iodination of albumin is a widespread procedure used in scientific studies. Bromine not only is more reactive and less expensive than iodine, but bonds more easily with many elements. Therefore, it could be a suitab...
